Pregnant Kate Middleton has finally given birth and a new baby boy has been added to the royal family! Prince William and Kate Middleton rushed to St. Mary’s hospital in London on Monday morning after the Duchess of Cambridge went into labor.
After what was described by a royal spokesperson as a ‘normal progression of labor,’ Kate Middleton gave birth to a new British prince at 4:24 p.m. local London time.
The royal palace issues a press statement this afternoon releasing the barest details of the royal baby’s birth. “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 p.m.,” the statement said. “The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz.”
The official announcement will also be posted on an easel at the Buckingham Palace gates for the public to view. Kate Middleton gave birth in the prestigious and private Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s in London, the same suite Princess Diana gave birth to Prince William and Prince Harry in.
Queen Elizabeth II declared on Prince William’s wedding day in 2011 that all of his children with Kate Middleton would be princes and princesses. Prince William and Kate Middleton’s baby will be officially addressed as His Royal Highness Prince of Cambridge and will be third in line for the British throne. Due to a recent change in the laws of succession, the baby would have been the new heir to the throne even if it had been a girl.
We do not yet know what the royal baby’s name is and it could be some time before that announcement is made. While Prince Charles and Princess Diana, along with the palace, released Prince Harry’s name the same day he was born, that wasn’t the case with Prince William. Royal watchers had to wait a whole week before learning Prince William’s name!
